Dyson Vacuum Reviews: The Dyson DC17

The Dyson DC17, though an upright, is a little heavier than some of the previous Dyson models, weighing in at just a touch more than 27 pounds. However, between the motorized brush and the Ball, it maneuvers fairly well for a vacuum of its size and the weight of the machine is evenly distributed across its wheels. The placement of the wheels themselves, behind the motor, gives it the appearance of being lighter than it is.
Owners of the DC17 upright vacuum stated that, though the model was not cheap, it outperformed other manufacturers’ models, like Kirby, Electrolux, Hoover, and even Miele, several of which were notably more expensive (the Rainbow being one of them). Further, most were impressed with its filtering system, saying it actually leaves the air smeller notably better. It comes with a powerhead attachment and several other tools to make jobs easier.

Dyson is quick to announce that the DC16 makes use of a lithium-ion battery, much like what is found in electric or hybrid cars. What this means is that, when you vacuum, it doesn’t start out strong and then give up power as you work. The energy output is very consistent and it recharges quickly when plugged back in. Some owners comment that the battery lasts only six minutes, making it impossible to replace their regular vacuum with this unit, but that, one must remember, wasn’t the point of this handheld model. The model is meant for “in between” jobs, to pick up things in places that are more conveniently reached with a handheld device.

Like the DC15, the Dyson DC16 has a clear canister, enabling the user to see when it needs to be emptied. It will even empty itself out with the push of a button. Convenience doesn’t come cheaply, however, and the Dyson DC16 is priced at about $170.
